The Future Glory of Israel

60 ^(A)Arise, shine, for your light has come,
    and ^(B)the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.
²For behold, darkness shall cover the earth,
    and thick darkness the peoples;
but the Lord will arise upon you,
    and his glory will be seen upon you.
³^(C)And nations shall come to your light,
    and kings to the brightness of your rising.

⁴^(D)Lift up your eyes all around, and see;
    they all gather together, they come to you;
^(E)your sons shall come from afar,
    and your daughters shall be carried on the hip.
⁵Then you shall see and ^(F)be radiant;
    your heart shall thrill and exult,^[a]
because the abundance of the sea shall be turned to you,
    ^(G)the wealth of the nations shall come to you.
⁶A multitude of camels shall cover you,
    the young camels of ^(H)Midian and ^(I)Ephah;
    all those from ^(J)Sheba shall come.
^(K)They shall bring gold and frankincense,
    and shall bring good news, the praises of the Lord.
⁷All the flocks of ^(L)Kedar shall be gathered to you;
    the rams of ^(M)Nebaioth shall minister to you;
^(N)they shall come up with acceptance on my altar,
    ^(O)and I will beautify my beautiful house.

⁸Who are these that fly like a cloud,
    and ^(P)like doves to their windows?
⁹For ^(Q)the coastlands shall hope for me,
    ^(R)the ships of Tarshish first,
^(S)to bring your children from afar,
    their silver and gold with them,
for the name of the Lord your God,
    and for the Holy One of Israel,
    because ^(T)he has made you beautiful.

¹⁰^(U)Foreigners shall build up your walls,
    and ^(V)their kings shall minister to you;
for in my wrath I struck you,
    but in my favor I have had mercy on you.
¹¹^(W)Your gates shall be open continually;
    day and night they shall not be shut,
^(X)that people may bring to you the wealth of the nations,
    with their kings led in procession.
¹²^(Y)For the nation and kingdom
    that will not serve you shall perish;
    those nations shall be utterly laid waste.
¹³^(Z)The glory of Lebanon shall come to you,
    the cypress, the plane, and ^(AA)the pine,
to beautify the place of my sanctuary,
    and I will make the place of my feet glorious.
¹⁴^(AB)The sons of those who afflicted you
    shall come bending low to you,
^(AC)and all who despised you
    shall bow down at your feet;
^(AD)they shall call you the City of the Lord,
    the Zion of the Holy One of Israel.

¹⁵^(AE)Whereas you have been forsaken and hated,
    with no one passing through,
^(AF)I will make you majestic forever,
    a joy from age to age.
¹⁶^(AG)You shall suck the milk of nations;
    you shall nurse at the breast of kings;
and you shall know that ^(AH)I, the Lord, am your Savior
    and your Redeemer, ^(AI)the Mighty One of Jacob.

¹⁷Instead of bronze I will bring gold,
    and instead of iron I will bring silver;
instead of wood, bronze,
    instead of stones, iron.
I will make your overseers peace
    ^(AJ)and your taskmasters righteousness.
¹⁸^(AK)Violence shall no more be heard in your land,
    devastation or destruction within your borders;
^(AL)you shall call your walls Salvation,
    and your gates Praise.

¹⁹^(AM)The sun shall be no more
    your light by day,
nor for brightness shall the moon
    give you light;^[b]
but the Lord will be your everlasting light,
    and your God will be your glory.^[c]
²⁰Your sun shall no more go down,
    nor your moon withdraw itself;
for the Lord will be your everlasting light,
    and ^(AN)your days of mourning shall be ended.
²¹^(AO)Your people shall all be righteous;
    ^(AP)they shall possess the land forever,
^(AQ)the branch of my planting, the work of my hands,
    that I might be glorified.^[d]
²²^(AR)The least one shall become a clan,
    and the smallest one a mighty nation;
^(AS)I am the Lord;
    in its time I will hasten it.

The Indictment of the Lord

6 ^(A)Hear what the Lord says:
Arise, plead your case before the mountains,
    and let the hills hear your voice.
²^(B)Hear, you mountains, ^(C)the indictment of the Lord,
    and you enduring foundations of the earth,
for the Lord has an indictment against his people,
    and he will contend with Israel.

³“O my people, ^(D)what have I done to you?
    ^(E)How have I wearied you? Answer me!
⁴For ^(F)I brought you up from the land of Egypt
    and ^(G)redeemed you from the house of slavery,
and I sent before you Moses,
    Aaron, and ^(H)Miriam.
⁵O my people, remember ^(I)what Balak king of Moab devised,
    and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him,
and what happened from ^(J)Shittim to Gilgal,
    that you may know ^(K)the righteous acts of the Lord.”

What Does the Lord Require?

⁶^(L)“With what shall I come before the Lord,
    and bow myself before ^(M)God on high?
Shall I come before him with burnt offerings,
    with calves a year old?
⁷^(N)Will the Lord be pleased with^[a] thousands of rams,
    with ten thousands of rivers of oil?
^(O)Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression,
    the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?”
⁸He has told you, O man, what is good;
    and ^(P)what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,^[b]
    and to ^(Q)walk humbly with your God?

Jesus Heals a Paralytic

2 And when he returned to ^(A)Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. ²And many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to them. ³^(B)And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. ⁴And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, ^(C)they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay. ⁵And when Jesus ^(D)saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, ^(E)your sins are forgiven.” ⁶Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, ⁷“Why does this man speak like that? ^(F)He is blaspheming! ^(G)Who can forgive sins but God alone?” ⁸And immediately Jesus, ^(H)perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you question these things in your hearts? ⁹Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, take up your bed and walk’? ¹⁰But that you may know that ^(I)the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic— ¹¹“I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.” ¹²And he rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and ^(J)glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!”

The Authority of the Son

¹⁹So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(A)the Son ^(B)can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father^[a] does, that the Son does likewise. ²⁰For ^(C)the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And ^(D)greater works than these will he show him, so that ^(E)you may marvel. ²¹For as the Father ^(F)raises the dead and ^(G)gives them life, so ^(H)also the Son gives life ^(I)to whom he will. ²²^(J)For the Father judges no one, but ^(K)has given all judgment to the Son, ²³that all may honor the Son, just as they ^(L)honor the Father. ^(M)Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. ²⁴Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(N)whoever hears my word and ^(O)believes him who sent me has eternal life. He ^(P)does not come into judgment, but ^(Q)has passed from death to life.

²⁵“Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(R)an hour is coming, and is now here, when ^(S)the dead will hear ^(T)the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear ^(U)will live. ²⁶^(V)For as the Father has life in himself, ^(W)so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. ²⁷And he ^(X)has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. ²⁸Do not marvel at this, for ^(Y)an hour is coming when ^(Z)all who are in the tombs will hear his voice ²⁹and come out, ^(AA)those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

Witnesses to Jesus

³⁰^(A)“I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and ^(B)my judgment is just, because ^(C)I seek not my own will ^(D)but the will of him who sent me. ³¹^(E)If I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is not true. ³²There is ^(F)another who bears witness about me, and ^(G)I know that the testimony that he bears about me is true. ³³^(H)You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. ³⁴Not that ^(I)the testimony that I receive is from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. ³⁵He was a burning and ^(J)shining lamp, and ^(K)you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. ³⁶But ^(L)the testimony that I have is greater than that of John. For ^(M)the works that the Father has given me ^(N)to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, ^(O)bear witness about me that ^(P)the Father has sent me. ³⁷And the Father who sent me ^(Q)has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, ^(R)his form you have never seen, ³⁸and ^(S)you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe the one whom he has sent. ³⁹^(T)You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and ^(U)it is they that bear witness about me, ⁴⁰yet ^(V)you refuse to come to me that you may have life.
